I am running on Windows 7, dual core.
My family has previously had Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows Vista and possibly a Windows 95.
I remembered playing starcraft back on the windows 98 and decided to try it out on 7, it makes all of the colors of the screen go crazy and the game freezes. I ended up fixing the colors yet still freezing. I have looked up basically every solution and found that a virtual machine is the only answer other than downgrading.
(Stuff that doesn't work is Set Affinity of the process to CPU 0, windowed mode, keeping the Resolution screen open, switching to 16-bit, compatibility mode, disabling aero, running on classic mode, or running as administrator).
I downloaded Sun Virtualbox (because I only have W7 Home Edition and can't get VirtualPC or XP Mode) and made a virtual machine for XP, just to realize that I needed my 98/XP/VISTA installation CD.
I was wondering (because I know that Floyd uses virtualpc) if you can use the CD that comes with a computer that has XP/VISTA pre-installed or if you have to buy the upgrade CD that you would use if you were going from 95-98 98-XP or XP-Vista.
So far I have found an empty CD case of windows 98, I will be looking for boxes the computers came in later today.
EDIT: I have been reading, and I think what I will be doing is downloading (K)ubuntu linux and dual-booting it with Windows 7, therefore allowing me to run SC (and more). Do you know anything about this floyd?

Virtual PC 2004 and 2007 work in Windows 7, but they are unsupported, I would still suggest them over VirtualBox. If you are trying to install XP in it, you can use any Windows XP installation disk, the same for installing 95, or 98. If you are going to install Windows 95, I would suggest installing VPC 2004, Windows 95, and then upgrading to VPC 2007.
If you had a disk that came with a computer with the operating system pre-installed, it SHOULD work, but it might not, the only way to know is to try.

and I know nothing about Linux, although I could help you dual boot 7 and any version of Windows or even better, 7 and eComStation.

I'm probably going to VirtualBox any disks I can find of old computers (is there any other way?) and dualboot linux. By the way, what is eComStation...?
Dualbooting W7 and Vista....DOUBLE FAIL.

You could torrent the disk images, or sometimes you can find them peinstalled. If you did decide to use Virtual PC I could send you preinstalled, fully functional VHDs of Windows 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 3.1, 3.11, NT 3.1, NT 3.51, Windows 2000. and MS-DOS 7.10.
eComStation is the modern day equivalent to OS/2. OS/2 is an operating system made by IBM and Microsoft to replace DOS. It has a graphical interface similar to Windows, but after OS/2 3.0, Microsoft hasn't had anything to do with it, they recessed Windows NT 3.5. read more here:

If you are going to dual boot, the simplest thing to do would be XP and Windows 7 I have dual-booted 7 and NT 3.51, but they ddn't really want to work together.
